Travelista Jessica Gibson discovers the relaxed cape town hideaway that invites their guests to ‘leave their shoes at the door’
The Cape View Clifton is not a hotel, far from it in fact. Made up of only seven rooms and suites, Cape View Clifton is an intimate and homely guesthouse that is redefining the concept of relaxed luxury travel. Located in the prime real estate territory of Cape Town’s Clifton Beach, the property is a converted family home, which is exactly how it still feels today.
One thing you cannot fail to miss upon arrival at the Cape View Clifton is the view. A breathtaking panorama of the ocean framed by the rugged 12 Apostles is the first thing you lay your eyes on after entering through the discreet top level of this multi-story beach condo. The rugged mountains, golden sands and crashing blue waves with white foamy peaks make the view both incredibly dramatic and wonderfully peaceful at the same time.
Descend two floors down and you reach the expansive open plan kitchen and living area. Light, bright and airy, this is space is the heart of the home. The property has been immaculately designed in a beach house style, which runs consistently from the deck to the guestrooms. With a subtle nautical theme alongside quirky and characterful details, the style is distinctive yet timeless.
The real gem of the Cape View Clifton is its outdoor deck area. Connected to the living area, the deck has a small plunge pool and a row of comfy sun loungers for that are perfect for soaking up the Capetonian rays. Come nightfall, the panoramic ocean view comes alight. Pinky hues glow over the mountains as the sun sinks into the sea, making it one of the most spectacular sunset spots in Cape Town.
Perfectly in keeping with the guesthouse concept, meal times are totally bespoke. Each morning a breakfast special is written on the chalkboard alongside a super-food breakfast buffet, but the charming cooks are also at hand to whip up anything upon request. Lunches and dinners are all about home-cooking comfort food and are catered for based on a menu of fresh, local and seasonal produce.
General Manager Cobus Bester encourages all guests to walk around the entire property bare foot. “You wouldn’t wear your shoes at home so why would you wear them here?”, he said. Cobus believes that one simple change such as taking your shoes off can affect your whole mindset into making you feel at home and after testing the theory, we can confirm that it works.
