Blancpain continues its efforts to preserve the world’s oceans with the latest Fifty Fathoms timepiece.
Blancpain has a distinguished history of producing superb diving watches that pay more than just lip service to our oceans. The latest such timepiece is the handsome Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Flyback Chronograph Blancpain Ocean Commitment II.
For each watch sold in this 250-piece limited edition, 1000 Euro will be donated in support of scientific expeditions. The EU250,000 from this will be added to Blancpain’s contributions in support of the oceans.
For the first time, the brand presents an entirely blue ceramic case on this Fifty Fathoms. This unique colouring is achieved by adding pigments during the ceramic production process.
This complicated procedure took several years of trials and the resulting watch is an intense shade of blue that “reflects the world of the oceans to which the Blancpain brand is so attached”.
The Flyback Chronograph BOC II has all the technical characteristics of a mechanical diving watch. It is water-resistant to 300 metres and its unidirectional bezel features grey inserts and hour-markers in Liquidmetal. Aside from this, it has a flyback function that enables immediate resetting of the chronograph to zero or restarting simply by pressing a Hass is regarded as a diving pioneer. The Austrian biologist, ethnologist, photographer and filmmaker started exploring the seabed at the end of the 1930s.
This new book, produced in collaboration with the Hans Hass Institute, highlights a manuscript that he wrote in the 1960s and has never been published in full. The book focuses on the years between the 1940s and 1960s and retraces the challenges of establishing these initial expeditions while offering a glimpse of the historical context of the period when Blancpain presented the first modern diving watch: the Fifty Fathoms.
