Hamad International Airport has got a new fashionable neighbour. Eight months after Qatar’s new airport started operating on land reclaimed from the Gulf, luxury resort group Anantara threw open a brand new property on a private island a short ferry ride away.
Occupying an entire island off the coast of Doha, the Banana Island Resort offers a perfect mid-point between an idle aquarium resort and a sophisticated urban hotel. Guests can hop on a private helicopter from Doha, greet the city’s futuristic skyline from above, then in just 10 minutes step in to one of the 141 rooms that looks out to nothing but beaches and azure blue water.
Decorated in the modernised Arabic style, all guestrooms look like the ideal settings for Generation-Y Aladdins. The choice is plenty, including 54 Premier Sea View Rooms, 16 Deluxe Sea View Rooms, eight Sea View Suites, 18 Anantara Suites and 34 spacious Sea View Pool Villas featuring a personal pool and poolside cabana.
This is also the first resort in Qatar to have over-the-water villas which are connected to the island by a walkway. Eight restaurants serve a variety of cuisines including Middle Eastern, Italian and American. Other facilities include tennis courts, a 30-berth marina, a nine-hole putting golf course and a Balance Wellness Centre providing holistic programmes.
With the looming skyline of Doha on the horizon, guests can enjoy a wide range of water sports: kayaking, wakeboarding, water skiing, jet skiing – and of course a banana boat ride.
