The Conrad London St James hotel has an enviable position in the heart of the capital. P1 checks in for a stylish stay
Here at P1, we believe you can tell a lot about a hotel by the welcome you receive on the threshold, and the headwear of the doorman. Approaching the classy Conrad London St James on a cool autumn day, there was a warm, no-fuss welcome from the gentleman sporting the dapper bowler hat – two good omens.
Situated on the site formerly occupied by the InterContinental, and before that the historic Queen Anne’s Chambers, this Conrad Hotels & Resorts luxury hotel is the first by the brand in the UK capital, and it has a cracking location. Opposite St James underground station and within short walking distance of the Houses of Parliament, Whitehall, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace – making it possibly the safest part of London.
But enough about outside. Once inside the Conrad’s classic façade, guests are greeted by a light, contemporary interior adorned by modern art and flourishes of décor influenced by the hotel’s political locale. It’s immediately an oasis of welcoming calm.
There are 256 rooms and suites at this Conrad, which sounds a lot, but at no stage does the property feel anything other than boutique. The hotel’s rooms feature elegant designs, king-sized or twin beds, relaxing bathtubs, walk-in showers, a media hub, a dedicated executive lounge, complimentary Wi-Fi, and the latest in-room technology.
The hotel claims to have some of the most spacious suites in London – including the Conrad Suite, which has its own private lift and entrance. It can be connected to eight other suites to create an entire private wing and houses several unique pieces of art.
P1 opted for a more low key but no less luxurious Junior Suite, which certainly delivered on space and refinement. A separate living room off an entrance corridor allowed for plenty of space for work and leisure, and would be ideal for a business break requiring meetings in-room.
The bedroom was again more than ample, and with bed linens to lose yourself in – for a night at least. Possibly the most comfortable night’s sleep we have experienced.
Guests can also tailor their experiences in advance by downloading the Conrad Concierge app. Check in while in transit, order room service, or make sure your suite comes complete with vegan hair care products – all through your smartphone.
Enjoy classic British cuisine at The Blue Boar restaurant and bar – showcasing locally sourced produce, farm fresh meats, and freshly caught seafood from Devon and Cornwall. There are also two private dining rooms at the Boar. Or for a more refined afternoon experience, the Conrad runs regular themed afternoon teas in Emmeline’s – the stylish casual dining option.
Guests can expect to leave the Conrad London St James fully rested and restored for their day ahead. Just don’t forget to tip the doorman – he may tip his bowler hat in appreciation.
